I always thought that one of the best things about travel was the fact that you could come home at the end. But on a recent trip to Spain I found the usually comforting sight Gatwick Airport’s Arrivals hall and its host of sunburnt returning holidaymakers slightly depressing. Maybe it was something to do with the fact that I’d been learning Spanish and had had a eureka moment when I realised that I could actually interact meaningfully with an entirely new host of people in their language. So my experience was completely different to previous ‘paella and a pool’ type Spanish holidays. It taught me the value of learning languages, not just for the sake of a better holiday (although its a perk!) but because through learning a language you inevitably learn about the culture of its native speakers which changes your whole perspective on your own.
